Six troops have killed following an exchange of fire with bandits in Bini Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara.

The troops were said to be returning to their base after a long-range patrol when the incident occurred which also led to the killing of 37 of the bandits and rescuing 80 kidnapped people in the process.

A statement by the Acting Information Officer of Operation Saharan Daji, Major Clement Abiade, confirmed the incident and the rescue operation of the victims.

He said among the rescued victims were men, women and children inside Dumburum Forest during mop-up operations that were conducted between February 4 and 14, 2019.

The statement further explains that six suspected bandits and their allies were also arrested while several weapons, ammunition and rustled cattle were recovered from their camps.

He recalled that hundreds of innocent people had been killed, some kidnapped and several others injured in many parts of Zamfara state in the past year by armed bandits who terrorised residents of the state and travellers at will.

“The intensity and redoubled efforts in the conduct of military activities in the past months seem to be yielding tremendous successes, leading to the killing of some of the bandits, recovery of guns, ammunition and rustled cattle”.
