Seafarers and people in the maritime transportation businesses, especially drivers at the Nembe waterfront as well as those who ply Bonny waterways into Bonny Island, the host community of the Multi-Billion dollar Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), have raised alarm that their lives are in danger over incessant attacks pirates.
Also of great concern to the seafarers living and doing business in Bonny Island in Rivers and Nembe in Bayelsa states is the danger posed by the existence of uncleared wreckages of unused boats and ships in the waterways that have been the major cause of boat disasters.
Residents of Bonny and Nembe, especially the boat drivers at the Nembe waterfront have raised alarm that their lives are precariously at risk over attacks by sea pirates and robberies of passengers.
At the waterfront jetty in Port Harcourt, fear and apprehension were glaringly written on faces of boat drivers and passengers plying Bonny, Bille and Nembe waterways that they have witnessed frequent attacks on the waterways in the last two weeks.
The suspicion is that the increase in the number of attacks by sea pirates is the craze for the quest to enmesh fast cash for the fast approaching Christmas.
Martins Jumbo of Bonny and Mrs Irene Preye from Nembe who spoke on behalf of the concerned seafarers appealed to the authorities, especially the marine police and the Nigerian Navy to deploy more marine boats and armed personnel to the waterways to protect lives and properties.
However, the newly deployed flag officer, Commanding Eastern Naval command, Rear Admiral Atiku Abubakar, has assured that more personnel will be deployed on the waterways to curb the menace of sea pirates and oil thieves in the creeks.
Abubakar gave the assurance during his recent visit Navy formations in Port Harcourt and environs like NNS Pathfinder and Naval training school, Onne, and also called for intelligent information that may lead to the arrest of those putting lives and properties in the waterways in Rivers state in jeopardy.
