Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) led by the vibrant President, Mr. Pretty Okafor celebrated 365 days in office on the 31st Oct 2015 since he received Judgement from the Federal High Court, Ikoyi.
He highlighted his executed events and achievements which includes PMAN Anti Piracy Walk with his first 100 days in office. On clocking 200 days in office, he hosted the Launch of the PMAN BIOMETRIC I.D CARD with the celebration of WORLD MUSIC DAY, organized the PMAN and NOLLYWOOD vs MEDIA kick out piracy novelty football match, PMAN signed with CBN on the registration of Nigerian Artists on the PMAN BIOMETRIC ID CARD, PMAN acquired her own SERVER to hold data of all Nigerian Entertainers. Its been controlled by NIBSS and supervised by CBN, PMAN signs 3billion naira contract with AIRTEL Nigeria. PMAN planned The Independence day Lagos Urban Music Festival,at Freedom park, Lagos Island.
The President seized the opportunity to remind Nigerians and Theatre practitioners a few facts to note; In his broadcast, he said ‘ PMAN is the only registered Entertainment Trade Union in Nigeria, meaning that every Association that has to do with entertainment is under PMAN..
If you are a performer of any kind….
Record Label Owners
Music Video Directors.
Are really all under PMAN….
PMAN is the only entertainment industry in Africa to own a server that can take millions of data of all of her members In Nigeria and In diaspora
Regardless of the intimidating population of Lagos, being the center of excellence, it is hereby imperative to state that PMAN cannot lead Nigerian musicians and focus only on Lagos, it is expected that provisions should be made to cater for the teeming musicians and performing artistes across the nation.
A few states have been ‘watering their soil’ awaiting the ‘planting of seeds’ by the national headquarters through the implementation of the goals highlighted above. One of such states is Cross River.
Years ago, an argument erupted from a statement in one of my articles referring to PMAN in Cross River state has the most active state chapter.
I embarked on another adventurous journey to affirm the persistence of that fact, and how the union has been faring. ‘Impressive’ will be my remark in one word, having witnessed the events, and attended their meeting which had a whooping number of 70 artistes present, yet still referred to as a poor turnout.
This to me, is watching the tiny seeds sown selflessly by the Chairman leading the embattled body in the state, it shouldn’t be so much of a surprise that if it seizes to exist, owing to tactics of some rival unions springing up from all corners, all whose lives where short lived. This eye witness account confirms and one can speak authoritatively that they have been waxing stronger, growing in wisdom and number.
Weekly Meetings holds on Mondays in Calabar, while other sub chapters are being inaugurated intermittently. PMAN Cross River has maintained a tradition of meeting weekly to review progress and plan their monthly Entertainers Nite.
PMAN Entertainers Nite holds every first week of the month, headlined by a seasoned artiste with a rising profile.
The last edition was themed ‘Classic Edition’, for the first time in years, it was headlined by Effiom Trombone, the long standing Chairman of the union in the state, who amongst other feats, has successfully planed the monthly entertainers Nite for 2 years alongside Seminars and the annual Cross River Music Awards.
Asides the award ceremony and monthly entertainer’s nite, Effiom has successfully united musicians of all genres, and ran the union to the recognition and admiration of the state government.
Little wonder the Classic Edition of PMAN Entertainers Nite had in attendance top personalities in the state drawn from the private and government circles.
It is nothing short of the truth, that if all go has planned, the apex body of performing acts in Cross River are leading a musical revolution in Nigeria which will see talents in the state proudly embracing creative arts as a profession, conducting themselves as professionals, deploying modern technologies and as such smiling to the bank.
Days and weeks from now, the green and beautiful paradise city of Calabar will be in the spotlight, as it plays host to the annual Calabar Festival which features days of nonstop performance and entertainment through out the yuletide, hosting all the big names in music from Nigeria and other parts of the world.
A visit to the Office of the Special Assistant to the Governor on Events confirms the preparedness of the state government, the office is a beehive of activities, showing that all hands are on deck, to host a World Class Event as always, with undisclosed unique concepts to wow the people and visitors this year.
