In an interview on Sunday, the Gabonese striker revealed that the basis for his desire to play in Spain was a promise he made to his grandfather.

“I’ve signed a contract until 2020,” Aubameyang said. “Like I’ve always said, I have a dream of playing in Spain.

“To explain it, it’s simple. My grandfather died a year ago already. I made him a promise that I would one day play in Spain. He was a fan of Real Madrid.

“I really hope to play in Spain one day. But for the moment I’m at Dortmund and what’s important is to concentrate on that.”

Aubameyang, who recently scored back-to-back hattricks, spoke of how he looks up to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo as challenges he wants to meet.

“It’s something that I really wanted to achieve — to do what the very best do,” he told Telefoot. “If you look at Ronaldo and Messi, they’re able to score three goals in a game and the next match they score four.

“I want to become like that. I already moved up a level with Jurgen Klopp. But I’m in the process of doing so again with Thomas Tuchel, who’s really given me freedom.”
