On-Shore/Off-Shore Oil Dichotomy: Akwa Ibom Leaders Descends on FG, Berates A’Ibom, S/South APC leaders

By Ephraim Ikpe

As a result of what it considers “swathed recommendation on resource control”, the Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard has descended heavily on the President Muhammamadu Buhari-led Federal Government for an attempt by the APC Restructuring Committee led by Nasir El-Rufai to “subtly reintroduce through the back door, the vexed onshore/off shore oil dichotomy that has long been settled in Nigeria”, adding that “the party’s (APC)position on the resource control clearly prognosticate an irredeemable disaster for Nigeria”.

“Nigeria is at the threshold of history that will make or mar her as a nation. We are saying no to illegal reintroduction of a settled matter of on-shore off-shore dichotomy. It is an expensive joke taken too far. Nigeria might not survive this one. Our patience has been stressed to its elastic limits”, Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard had declared in its press statement read to Journalists last week.

In a press briefing in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, members of the Vanguard led by Senator Anietie Okon described the report of the APC Committee on restructuring as “hurriedly assembled” and tainted with “the evil agenda of the party: composite strange bed fellows characterized unfortunately by mutual deceits”.

The Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard said, ”It is frightening that, the Chieftains of the party(APC) in the South-South are dangerously quiet over this calculated attempt” to re-introduce the obnoxious oil dichotomy and hence “call on the APC leaders in Akwa Ibom State to stand up and be counted at this critical moment in our nation’s history, especially as it affects the people of Akwa Ibom State.  It will be interesting to know where they stand on this all important matter. They cannot sit on the fence!!! It is now imperative for the above mentioned persons to show clearly on which side of the divide they stand”.

According to the press statement, “It is inconceivable that any person or group of persons with an iota of our prattled nationhood will attempt to create more crisis in an already volatile Niger Delta Region, that has endured most of the ills of the contraption fraudulently referred to as a Federal system finagled on Nigeria”.

The body recalled President Buhari’s new year message how he considered restructuring as an anathema not to be contemplated in Nigeria, saying that a juxtapose of such statement from the President and the pretentious posture of the El-Rufai’s Committee smacks of APC  as a party in disarray.

“For the benefit of doubt, we want to state explicitly and unambiguously our concerns and consternation about the ambivalent and duplicitous position of the APC as it is clear to every discerning mind that the APC is a party in disarray. For instance, in his New Year speech, President Muhammad Buhari clearly considered Restructuring an anathema that should not be contemplated. Juxtaposing that with the position of the APC as a party represented by the El-Rufai’s Committee that on the face value seemingly supports restructuring, it is dangerous to say the least Nigeria”, the Leaders Vanguard stated.

The Leaders Vanguard stated further, “We cannot but ask why the Chairman, a former Governor, who is expected to fully appreciate the real essence of federalism and the aspirations of Nigerians on the subject would be part of a defective, and deceitful premises. This exemplifies the height of dishonestly and an attempt to pull the wool over our eyes… While awaiting the APC to come to terms with the reality regarding true federalism that has been overwhelmingly endorsed by Nigerians as the only credible pathway to sustainable development and continued existence of Nigeria as an indivisible virile and strong nation”.

The Press Statement with the subject matter “IT IS THE TIME TO TAKE A STAND TO SAVE NIGERIA” was accented to, for the body, by Distinguished Senators Anietie Okon, Emmanuel Ibok Essien, Effiong Bob; Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga(retd), Rt. Hon. Nduese Essien, Hon. Dr Esio Oquong Udoh, Hon. Dr. Akon Eyakeyi and Chief Dr. Emmanuel Ukpong.

In attendance at the press briefing were Senator Anietie Okon,  Prof Emmanuel Onwioduokit and Barr Hogan Okon.
