Dr, Ogbonnaya Onu, Nigeria's new Minister of Science and Technology

As with most of the nominations, most Nigerians barely new about Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu before he was nominated for a ministerial position by the president.

President Muhammadu Buhari swore in Nigeria’s next batch of ministers and inaugurated the next Federal Executive Council at a ceremony yesterday in Abuja.

Amongst those who were sworn in is Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu as the new Minister of Science and Technology.

 

As with most of the nominations, most Nigerians barely new about Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu before he was nominated for a ministerial position by the president. Here are 7 amazing facts you didn’t know about Nigeria’s new Minster of Science and Technology

  • Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu was born on December 1, 1951.

  • He is a prince. Yes, an actual prince. He was born into the family of His Royal Highness, Late Eze David Aba Onu, Eze Adu of Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria.

  • Dr. Onu was a stellar student. He graduated with distinction in his West African School Certificate examination at Izzi High School, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State. He also obtained distinctions in Physics and Chemistry at the Higher School Certificate examination at the College of Immaculate Conception, CIC, Enugu, graduating as the best overall student.

  • After graduating from the University of Lagos with a degree in Chemical Engineering, back in 1976. He went to obtain his Doctor of Philosophy at the reputable University of California, Berkeley, California, USA, in 1980, without passing through a Masters degree.

  • Whilst at the University of California, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu was president of the African Students Union.

  • He was the first ever elected governor of Abia State.

He is married to Dr. (Mrs) Chinyere Onu, with children.
