Here’s How Akwa Ibom State Government Plans to Tackle Flooding in Uyo

The Uyo Urban Trainee Master Plan has been presented to the Akwa Ibom State Government. The Master plan was developed by the Technical Committee set up to investigate the cause of recent flooding in some parts of Uyo Metropolis.

The Special Adviser, Bureau of Technical Matters, Engr. Etido Inyang, stated this in Uyo on Government intervention and flooding and flood control in Akwa Ibom State.

Engr. Inyang, in a power point presentation said that the master plan which captures Uyo the State Capital as a catchment area which ideological and hydraulic designs will be implemented in phases due to high cost of the construction.

The Special Adviser who heads the committee said that the present administration is putting in place intervention measures and strategies which when implemented will make this state free from any flood situation.

He advised the public to desist from building on flood plains stressing that the Government was committed to proper drainage planning to cushion the effect of flood in the State.

The Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Prince Enobong Uwah, who noted the effect of flooding on the economic and social well-being of the people, said Government was sensitive to the plight of the masses and is doing everything to prevent flood in the State.

He called on the media to continue to partner the government in educating the people on the proper ways of refuse disposal.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Aniekan Umanah advised Journalist to focus more attention on developmental issues instead of heating up the polity as prelude to 2015 elections.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ), Elder Patrick Albert assured that the media will live up to its expectation of disseminating the tools and giving the society the best of Government policies and programs.

Journalist were taken round the project sites including Iniobong Retention Point Station, ongoing construction of 4.3 Km main drainage across Tropicana Trough, Afaha Ibesikpo Asutan to Aka Nnung Udo Road handled by Julius Berger, Ring Road 3 discharge drain which on completion will serve the Stadium complex, State Secretariat complex, Aka Etinan, C- Division Police station, Atan Offot Community, Aka Community and its environs.

At the gully erosion Construction site on Dominic Utuk Avenue Uyo, the project manager of the Nigerpet Structures, Engr.  Antony Jerome, told the team that the project is expected to be completed in (18) Eighteen Month.

The tour ended with a visit to the construction site at Ewet Housing Estate during which the National President of (NUJ) Mallam Mohammed Garba, who was on official visit to the State, lauded Akwa Ibom State Governor, Sir (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio (CON) JP for his uncommon Transformation and urged journalists to keep to ethical standards in the course of informing the public.
