The paramount ruler of Ijeshaland Oba Gabriel Adekunle Aromolaran II has reiterated that the call for traditional rulers to be ascribed roles in the constitution may lead to dragging them into politicking.

Speaking with, Owa of Ijesaland said  Oba Adekunle said that it is not until traditional rulers are given constitutional roles before their impacts are felt in governance.

Though he acknowledged that traditional rulers are the closest to the people at the grassroots and hence, government cannot do without them,  he emphasised that involving them in politics may get them enmeshed in dirty politics.

”You can be in government without joining a political party.  That is the way it is here. If you want to politicize traditional rulership then you can think of involving them and that means messing up their traditions”

”I don’t believe Obas should be given constitutional roles because if for instance,  I’m made president or chairman of a local government, perhaps given a similar role, I don’t see that as promotion for me.”

”I don’t see how involving traditional rulers in governance make for any improvement in status. I don’t believe in that. Is just like being a president of a country and retarding once progress to become local government administrative officer.” he said.

Oba Aromolaran said traditional rulers should been seen as fathers of their respective domains and being fathers means they are expected to play advisory roles.

‘”Just like the Queen of England. Her name is on the currency. She prorogues parliament and she wheels very great power. Prime minister of Britain references the queen. What can be more prestigious?” he queried.

”If you want to make the Queen the chancellor of the head-checkers or minister of defence, you are not adding to her status rather you are diminishing her.” he opined.
