Following the donation of N150 million to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states by the Lagos state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, has commended the gesture.
Commending the All Progressives Congress governor, Buhari noted that such kind intention would help improve on the welfare of IDPs in various camps in the affected states as well as in their rehabilitation.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Buhari made the commendation in a statement signed by her special assistant on media, Mrs Adebisi Ajayi, on Friday, October 30, in Abuja.
The wife of the president further urged other states and individuals in this light saying that Governor Ambode’s donation should be emulated.
Shortly after the council of state meeting, the Lagos state governor had on October 21, presented three cheques of N50 million each to governors of the three sates affected by Boko Haram insurgency.
Stressing that insurgency had remained a major challenge in the country, Mrs Buhari expressed optimism that it would soon be a thing of the past.
She appealed to governors of the affected states to take measures at ensuring that children in the IDPs’ camps were properly catered for.
Buhari said: “I am grieved as a mother that children can go through such appalling conditions in their country.”
She also noted that malnutrition rate of children in the camps had risen, explaining that children had specialised nutritional needs.
She said: “The current situation underscores the importance of highly specialised nutritional support for this category of children.”
Meanwhile, four members of the dreaded Islamist sect were arrested in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, as they made attempts to enter the IDPs camp in Pompomari.
Following the recent incessant attacks by the sect, President Muhammadu Buhari had expressed pessimism over the Nigerian troops’ possible success against the insurgents by December. But the Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Tukur Buratai, disagreed with him, noting that the military is on course to wipe out the terrorists.
