Okon Iyanam – an Akwa Ibom man of Oron descent is a man with strong human capital development and management skills acquired through 26 years of exposure and experience in ultra-large multinational organizations. He is a robust intellectual, an accomplished manager or resources, a result-driven entrepreneur and an extremely competent developer and manager of human capital.
He is one of the aspirants seeking to replace Governor Godswill Akpabio in the forth-coming Akwa Ibom Governorship elections in 2015.
As a member of the ruling party PDP, Okon Iyanam says “He’s motivated to serve and contribute his modest abilities towards the sustainable development and modernization of Akwa Ibom State and further sustain the current transformation agenda and transport it to the next and more critical stage of industrialization, agriculture commercialization and the achievement of revenue security.
On money and politics, Okon Iyamam says “Consider this scenario: You call a meeting, kill a goat and provide food and drinks. The agenda is considered, sometimes with much rancor and acrimony. All you are told by the attendees at this meeting is that you need tonnes of money to see your way through to the governorship.
For good measure, they advise that if you don’t have this money, you should consider stepping down. With food and drinks exhausted, they inform you that a next adjourned date should be considered; that done, the meeting ends.
Hands stretched, they demand N30, 000 each for their attendance. And they are about 20 of them. Consider that you may host hundreds of these meetings before the primaries. Do the math yourself. This is the typical scenario which best describes the lead up to political contest today.
Listen guys, Okon Iyanam will NOT spend that kind of money! THE ONLY GUYS READY TO SPEND IT ARE GUYS WHO HAVE NO SENSE OF FINANCIAL VALUE, GUY WHO ARE PREPARED TO PURCHASE GOVERNMENT, GUYS WHO SEE GOVERNMENT AS AN INVESTMENT AND THEIR ROLE, AS INVESTORS WITH AN EYE ON GAIN. In the first place, this kind of guy must have made money from government and a bit too easily. Otherwise, they would consider spending it a bit more wisely and with an eye towards sustainable results.
Don’t get me wrong! We will fund the campaign and provide absolute necessary logistics support for this project. But we will NOT THROW MONEY AROUND. Okon Iyanam Foundation (OIF) is the vehicle through which we will see to channel scarce resources to sustainable causes in Education, Medicare, Entrepreneurship Development and in Water and Sanitation.
Well beyond the politics, this vehicle will continue to be driven – even faster! We earned the money the hard way. And we have an obligation to spend it judiciously.
To the numerous groups and individuals who expect a universal disbursement of largesse on account of my aspirations, I urge you in earnest to perish that thought. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN with me! I am not proposing a paradigm shift. Let those who can do so continue to do so. I will simply have no part in the money politics thing.
I have an eye towards clean government and I am not seeking to make an investment from which I must reap.”
