2019: As Inemesit Ubokudom mulls running for Nsit Ibom State Constituency seat

By Osondu Ahirika

It was in July 2013, I vividly remember. My phone rang and at the back end, the caller introduced himself as Hon. Inemesit Ubokudom. He was at that time, the elected Councillor representing Mbiaso Ward 1 in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area Legislature.

Then serving as the Deputy Leader of the Legislative arm, he had called me up to lead a Press team to cover his planned Ward briefing for that year. Inemesit Ubokudom wanted to report progress (apologies to Barrister Onofiok Luke, Speaker, Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly). A practice also actively encouraged by Governor Udom Gabriel Emmanuel.

That was where he ‘shocked’ me. On that eventful day in 2013, Hon. Ubokudom doled out three cars, including a Toyota corolla saloon for the then Ward Chairman of PDP, Mr Richard George, one Honda Civic for Mr Udeme, and an Audi 80 saloon for Mr Uwem Bob of blessed memory. Another10 motorcycles were also handed out to other beneficiaries.  I could not believe my eyes.

It was unprecedented. A Councillor to do what no Local Government Chairman, to  my knowledge, did back then. This man must have a heart of gold. As a rule, I believe that a heart without charity is afflicted by the worst heart disease.

The car was not all. Hon. Ubokudom’s empowerment packages included ; vocational training of several indigent persons in driving, fashion designing, wood and furniture making, building and welding technology, hair dressing, among others.

What more? He gave out soft capital to over one hundred men and women in the Ward for small scale businesses. Other items in the mix, comprised,  sewing machines, generating sets, and hair dryers etc.

By December,  I was back again to cover the annual Inter family Tournament he initiated and sponsored, attracting kith and kin from diaspora to come home every December to renew filial bonds. A whooping 500,000 was set aside every year to fund the competition with prize money for winners and stand-out performers.

Running concurrently with the football tourney was a Table-tennis competition. These sports Fiestas were capped by the Ward briefing of December 26th, which was sacrosanct. I was left with no doubt, Hon. Ubokudom was decidedly committed to accountable and responsive representation of his people, even at the lowest rung of elective  political office, at the third tier of government in our nation. That’s how he won my admiration.

Out of power, during which he won Awards, thrice being named,  Best Councillor, between 2012-2015, he found another way to reach out to his people. Hon. Ubok has converted the 26th of December to a day he fetes his people and in the spirit of yuletide, donates food items including rice, cows, and cash to widows and the less privileged.

I have it on good authority that, apart from also financing road maintenance in his Ward, he has grown a habit of supporting his people during occasions like weddings, funerals and Child blessings with monetary assistance.

To ensure fairness and probity, a standing committee with members drawn, at least one from each of the eight families in Mbiaso Ward 1, make findings and submit reports to him on the needs in the Ward that he can leverage on his contacts to resolve.

Wholly dedicated to community service, Hon. Inemesit Ubokudom, now is mulling throwing his hat into the ring for the Nsit Ibom State Constituency seat, in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly come 2019.  That is a given. I find it expedient that, for the first time, I pen this ode to a worthy son of Nsit Ibom and an Ambassador of Light for Mbiaso Ward 1.

Hon. Ubokudom, a successful businessman holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture and was born on the said birthday in 1975. As his people continue to mount pressure on him to contest the election and go represent them in the Akwa Ibom State Legislature, I wish not to forget his good deeds and consign them to unthankfulness. Even though I am no direct beneficiary of his large heart, I know and can testify that, he has gone about doing good and spreading love.

If he held that empowerment programme as a Councillor, which by the way it remains unprecedented up until date, I wonder what he would do if he is elected to a bigger office.

Governor Udom Emmanuel has amplified the Peoples Democratic Party insistence on adherence to the existing zoning principle for the 2019 elections. Accordingly, going by the effective zoning formula prevailing in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area between the two blocs of Asang and Mbiaso Court areas, the zoning favours Hon. Ubokudom who is from Mbiaso Court area.

Of more advantage is the quest for equity and justice, which presents the case of Mbiaso Ward 1 as very critical for consideration. The said Mbiaso Ward 1 is yet to produce a State House of Assembly member for Nsit Ibom since, 1991. Hon. Ubokudom fits perfectly into the contention if this reality is factored in.

The loving husband of one beautiful woman, Mrs Nsidibe Inemesit and dutiful father of four lovely children, has the capacity and passion for service. As his people give him the clarion invitation, Nsit Ibom should look out for their son who they can count on.
