Solomon Arase, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has warned officers to desist from the barbaric act of shooting at innocent civilians and vowed that any officer who does will be arraigned before a court within 48 hours.

The Punch reports that the IGP gave this warning on Thursday, November 19 at the headquarters of the Ogun state command in Eleweran, Abeokuta. His visit to the state was to ascertain the level of preparedness of officers ahead of the burial of the late Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo.

Arase warned officers on convoy to also desist from the act of whipping civilians.

“Nigerians are not animals; don’t beat civilians with horse whips, especially the officers on a governor’s convoy should be stopped by Commissioners of Police.

“Any police officer that shoots a civilian must be arraigned in court within 48 hours, because you’re not allowed to shoot a civilian.”

The police chief also said that Supernumerary Police (SPY) officers who are attached to banks for security purposes to stop parading in police uniforms as from January 1, 2016 or risk being arrested and detained.

Arase also promoted eight sentry guards of the command – Haruna Ijiji, Tochukwu Igwe, Friday Momodu, Faruna Danjuma, Felix Adejoh, Mathew Adelu, Usip Uwemedimo and Emmanuel Unazi – to their next ranks for impressive performance during his inspection of guards of honour.

The IGP directed Abdulmajid Ali, the state commissioner of police to look for a suitable land with title documents as the police high command as a welfare package had concluded plan to construct a 25,000 post-retirement housing estate for ranks and files across the country.

He added that 36, 000 officers had benefitted from promotional courses while others with additional qualifications would also be considered
