Qualifiers in both primary and secondary school categories for the Akwa Ibom State Youth Sports Festival have been held at Community Secondary School, Ikot Esop, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area.
In a chat with a #WetinhappenPR Correspondent, the Supervisor for Education in the area Mr. Ekemini Umana, who represented the Chairman of the council, Honorable Udeme Eduo at the event said, Etim Ekpo will leave no stones unturned in the on-going exercise as it is determined to produce top athletes and sportsmen to represent the local Government, Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at any level.
The Supervisor lauded the efforts of the Governor Udom Emmanuel-led administration in creating opportunities for Akwa Ibom youths to excel in the world of sports by dotting the state with worldclass mini-sports complex.
He also praised the council chairman Honorable Eduo for his commitments in ensuring that youth development is given top-priority and also for his support towards the hosting a hitch-free qualifiers.
Mr. Umana tasked the competitors who have come from different schools in the area, to abide by the rules of the selection process and believe in themselves and also in the Akwa Ibom dream of producing at least one Olympic gold medal winner in the near future.
The maiden edition of the Akwa Ibom State Youth Sports Festival is organized by the State Government through the State Ministry of Youth and Sports in partnership with the Ministry of Education. The event kicked off on Tuesday, February 14 with the Local Government Elimination Series.
The games are organized in primary and secondary schools categories. The primary school category comprises thirteen sports while the secondary school category will be in fifteen sports.
Some of the sports to be competed include football, basketball, volleyball, handball, wrestling and athletics. Others are judo, karate, swimming, badminton, tennis, squash, taekwondo, and scrabble.
Champions from each Local Government Area will qualify to participate in the State Finals of the Games which have been scheduled to take place in Uyo from March 15 to March 19.
