Former All Africa Games boxing champion Olufemi Oyeleye will make his long awaited pro debut in American rings on Friday.

Oyeleye, who against all odds won a gold medal for Nigeria at the 2015 Africa Games in Brazzaville, Congo when he overcame Cameroun’s Salif Msangou Njikan in the final of the 69kg welterweight category, will fight a yet to be announced opponent at Sam’s Town Hotel and Gambling Hall, Las Vegas, Navada.

The Nigerian boxer, who left for the United States in controversial circumstances after failing to secure a spot on the boxing team to the Rio Olympics Boxing Trials held in Cameroun last March, linked up with former Olympian Charles Nwokolo who runs a boxing gym in Vegas.

Oyeleye’s impressive showing in training subsequently earned him a deal with Mayweather Promotions and he is expected to fight four times a year.

Nwokolo, in a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com from his Navada base, disclosed that he expects Oyeleye to get to the very top of the sport if he can keep his head.

“Femi has started very well and he has all it takes to make it to the top in boxing,” Nwokolo  who will be at his corner during the bout, said.

“I expect nothing but victory from him and I’m sure he will deliver.”

On why his opponent has not been named with days to the bout, the seasoned trainer who was on Nigeria’s boxing team to the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles waved the question aside.

“Sometimes it’s like that for debutants, I’m sure his promoters will not give him someone who will give him much trouble, they also have their interest to protect.”
